Continuing success for Shepherd’s Carnegie Village project
Continuing success for Shepherd’s Carnegie Village project Monday 29th March, 2010

In the spotlight this week is Shepherd Constructions £19m residential project, Carnegie Village (UPP) in Leeds, which has been recognised for its success.

The project has received a national BREEAM 2010 Award in the multi-residential category. The buildings shortlisted for the Awards were drawn from those achieving Excellent ratings under various BREEAM schemes during 2009.

A BREEAM ‘EXCELLENT' rating is a pre-qualification, so the winners truly represent the UK's top examples of sustainable design.

The award was presented by Carol Atkinson, Chief Executive of BRE Global, at the Ecobuild Conference on Wednesday 3rd March where Shepherd Constructions Managing Director Phil Greer collected the award with representatives from UPP, Leeds Metropolitan University and GWP.

Continuing with its success, the project has also been short-listed for the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Awards 2010 in the Residential category.

Other categories include, Building Conservation, Commercial, Community Benefit, Design & Innovation, Regeneration, Sustainability and Tourism & Leisure and there is also a prestigious 'Project of the Year' accolade, which is awarded to the entry judged to have scored the highest across all categories.

The category winners and the Project of the Year will be announced at the Awards Ceremony in Leeds on Friday 14 May 2010.

In addition to this, the building has also been awarded a Quality Approved Passive House certificate by The Building Research Establishment Ltd on behalf of the Passivhaus Institut.

The certificate certifies that the planning of the building meets the criteria for Passive Houses, which supply outstanding thermal insulation resulting in low energy consumption.

The development includes two Passivhaus townhouses and also provides 479 student study bedrooms in ‘cluster flat’ and ‘townhouse’ arrangements.
