Cranes Go Up At Bournville College Site

Building work on Shepherds new £66m Bournville College project in Birmingham is progressing well with the first two of three 30 metre-high cranes being moved onto site.

Shepherd has been on-site since 26th October 2009 and is due to complete the groundworks and foundations in May.  As the build programme moves forward nearly 100 construction workers are currently employed on site including a number of sub contractors.

The new building, which has been designed by the Birmingham office of international design practice Broadway Malyan, will consolidate the College’s existing three campuses into one flagship educational establishment spanning six storeys.

Scheduled to complete in time for the new academic year in September 2011, Bournville College is expected to accommodate 15,000 students in both further and higher education.

Shepherd's project team is working closely with St. Modwen, Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and the Environment Agency to deliver the new College, which will be situated off the A38 Bristol Road South at the heart of the 468-acre former MG Rover car production plant.

Shepherd's Birmingham-based construction director Richard Fielding commented: “Work is progressing well on-site and the arrival of the cranes will see the team starting to build upwards over the coming months as this striking college continues to take shape.”

Shepherd also completed Walsall College’s new Wisemore Campus last year as part of Walsall’s £750m regeneration project.
