Ribbon Cutting Marks Milestone For University Library
The University of York has marked the latest milestone in the modernisation and refurbishment of the University’s JB Morrell Library ahead of the completion of the £14 million project by Shepherd Construction next year.
To mark the milestone, Graeme Osborn, Academic Officer York University Students’ Union and Stephen Town, Director of Information at the university of York, cut a ribbon to officially open the new main entrance to the Library.
Shepherd Construction started the major refurbishment project in January 2010 and work is expected to complete in February 2012.
Once complete, the Library will provide a much-improved study facility for the University’s 15,000 students and will house more than one million print books, 3,500 print journal titles, and numerous special collections.
Colin Sargeant, Shepherd Construction’s East Division managing director commented: “We’re now in the final stage of the project which has required carefully planned logistics given that the library has remained operational throughout much of the refurbishment programme, and necessitated close communication with the University at all times.”
Liz Waller, Deputy Director of Information, said: “It is exciting to haveour new entrance in place to welcome our customers in a fitting way to the high quality, refurbished spaces within the Morrell and the Fairhurst buildings. We are looking forward to the final completion of work in 2012 when we will have added a new Library café and social space to further enhance the facilities.”
