Shepherd Construction Gets Smarter On Waste Management

National contractor Shepherd Construction has reinforced its commitment to following best practice in waste management after signing up to one of the building industry’s leading site waste management membership schemes.

Through the silver membership status under BRE’s SMARTWaste Membership scheme, Shepherd Construction is dedicated to achieving the highest standards on site waste management plans (SWMP’s), which have been a legal requirement on all projects over £300,000 since 2008.

The membership includes access to the smartER reporting tool to capture and monitor onsite energy consumption (electricity, gas, fuel use), water consumption and the procurement of certified timber, providing comprehensive monitoring, reporting and targeting of our environmental and CO2 impacts.

Through the membership scheme, Shepherd will also have access to the software, technical support, training and guidance offered by BRE, which is one of the construction industry’s leading independent consultancy and research bodies.

Paul Hutchinson, Shepherd Construction’s environmental facilitator commented: “Shepherd has always been extremely stringent when it comes to operating site waste management plans. However our SMARTWaste membership will support our commitment to achieving even higher sustainability standards.

“Not only will we have access to a wealth of support that will make the SWMP process more efficient but also the latest technical advice and guidance to ensure we can achieve cost savings and improve our waste management performance even further.”
