Shepherd Primed For BAE Systems Work

Shepherd has started work on the modernisation of a 5.7 hectare munitions factory at Radway Green in Crewe, on behalf of defence, security and aerospace company BAE Systems.

The £20m project will involve demolishing the existing building and replacing it with a new factory complete with indoor firing range. Welfare and administration facilities such as staff restaurant and car park will also be built; together with the creation of space for future developments.

The new factory, which will manufacture small arms ammunition for the British troops, is one of three manufacturing sites that BAE Systems is committed to modernising to make them more highly automated and energy efficient.

The new build is scheduled to complete in May 2011.

Peter Millett, Managing Director West for Shepherd commented: “We are delighted to have started work on-site. During the build, the project will require specialist construction of the ammunition propellant storage facilities and production areas to incorporate explosive and bullet-proof design elements.”

Charlie Blakemore, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Munitions business added: “This is a strategic investment for BAE Systems and the Ministry of Defence and the new facility will be a world leader.”
