Shepherd wins Wolverhampton Leisure Centre build
Shepherd has won a £14.9m contract to build Bilston Leisure Centre on behalf of Wolverhampton City Council.
The striking new build project will replace the existing leisure centre in Bilston and will be the first permanent building of the £175m urban village project, a 100-acre development that will create a new urban community including homes, employment opportunities, a primary and community care centre, a new Academy school, parkland and a high quality pedestrian boulevard to link with the town centre.
The leisure centre is set to create a new landmark in the town with its contemporary curved structure and rows of floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Construction work begins 22 February on the 5,600m² leisure centre, on vacant land off the Black Country Route. The centre will comprise an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool, learner pool, health and fitness suite, four squash courts, a sports hall, cafe and meeting room.
Once complete, in May 2011, the new facility will create 33 new full-time jobs.
Peter Millett, Shepherd Construction’s managing director for the West Division, comments: “We’re looking forward to working closely with the city council on a prestigious and striking building that will provide a great facility for the local community.”
